Sept. 11, 2003

CLEVELAND - David Howell, a record setting player and former interim head coach at Allegheny College, has been named to the tennis coaching staff at Cleveland State University, head coach Brian Etzkin has announced.

"I'm very excited to have David as a member of our program," Etzkin said. "His teaching experience will be extremely beneficial to the success of the men's and women's teams this season."

Howell joins the Viking coaching staff after serving as interim head coach at Allegheny College in the fall of 2002. In addition, he served as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence University in 2001-02.

As a student-athlete at Allegheny, Howell enjoyed a distinguished playing career, setting school records for single-season wins at doubles (20), and career singles wins (70), doubles wins (74) and combined wins (144). He was also a two-time all-North Coast Athletic Conference first-team selection, and earned second-team honors four times.

Howell has also served as a teaching professional at numerous area clubs, including Beechmont Country Club, Walden Country Club and Chagrin Valley Athletic Club. He currently works as the assistant pro at Western Reserve Racquet Club in Streetsboro.

A 2000 graduate of Allegheny College, Howell is United States Professional Tennis Association Certified at a Professional 2 level.
