Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Beat IPFW
Oct. 12, 2004
Contact: David Barry Cleveland - The Cleveland State men's and women's tennis teams beat IPFW Tuesday in a dual match at Malaga Tennis Center, with the men's team earning a 7-0 sweep while the women prevailed with a 6-1 victory. The women (3-2) rebounded from a Monday's 4-3 loss to sweep all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches. After winning the doubles point, Jenn Myers and Morgan Ungerott got quick, straight-set wins to set the tone for the Vikings. No. 1 Sarah Galon clinched the victory with a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2 win. "Jenn and Morgan came out today and really set the pace for us today," coach Brian Etzkin said after the match. "It was also nice to see Sarah get the clincher. She had to change her game - going to more moonballing after the first set. But Sarah was willing to do whatever it took to throw her opponent's play off." Lindsay Sellers and Rebekah Bicksler each also recorded straight set victories for Cleveland State. The match marked the second straight day the Vikings won the doubles point. "We are really hitting our stride in doubles, Etzkin remarked. "We are getting to know each other better and the wins gave us momentum heading into singles." The men's (3-3) team handed IPFW a 7-0 loss as Cleveland State won by a clean sweep for the second time this season. The other came over St. Francis in the first match of the season. "This team's come a long way in a week," Etzkin said after the match. "We were down last weekend and not playing our best, but this team has rebounded and we have a new outlook on our season because of it." The Vikings got off to a nice start as well, taking two of the three doubles matches to win the points. Jay Tee and Brett Aronson combined for a 9-8 (7) victory at No. 3 singles to secure the point and give the Vikings the early lead. "Our doubles play set the tone today," Etzkin noted. "Had we not won that point, IPFW would have had more confidence and passion entering singles play." Eric Winn, Dan Singer, Jordan Reynolds, and Aronson each registered straight set victories, with Brad Groleski and Paul Haley winning in three sets. Cleveland State was 4-1 in tiebreakers and 2-0 in three-set matches on the afternoon. "We're playing the tougher points tougher," Etzkin said. "A week ago we weren't winning these points. But today the guys came through in the pressure situations." The dual match signals the conclusion of the fall season for each team, as Cleveland State awaits to hear which individuals have qualified for the ITA Regionals to be played the weekend of Oct. 21-24. The tournament sends women to Minneapolis while the men head to Ann Arbor. |
