Vikings Drop First Conference Match
Oct. 2, 2004 Contact: David Barry Valparaiso, IN - The Cleveland State men's tennis team dropped its first conference match of the season, a 7-0 loss to UW-Green Bay Saturday afternoon in Valapraiso, Indiana. The Vikings will have a chance to split the roadtrip when they take on host Valparaiso Sunday, Oct. 3rd at 1:00 p.m. "We didn't play well today," coach Brian Etzkin said after the match. "But it wasn't a lack of effort. We prepared well, and this was one of the best practice weeks we've had since I've been at Cleveland State. Things just didn't go our way today." Brad Groleski played number one singles today for the first time. The freshman lost, 6-4, 6-4. "I was happy how Brad constructed his points today," Etzkin said. "In time he'll get more aggressive and will develop the necessary weapons to be a very good number one player." Groleski's match was the closest the Vikings came to a point in the match, as Cleveland State struggled to win points all afternoon. "We expected to win today," Etzkin said. "To come out of here without a point is disappointing. We did not finish points and we need to be more match-tough in the future. We will have to work hard so we can beat a team like that at the end of the season." The match marked the first conference match of the season. The Vikings will have a chance again tomorrow against a much-improved Valparaiso squad. "Valpo is going to be similar to what we saw today," Etzkin said. "Hopefully we can come back and beat a good team tomorrow. We're not happy campers right now, but we will re-evaluate and go back at it again tomorrow (Sunday)." |
