SETTING THE SCENE: The men's and women's swimming and diving teams of four local schools will meet at the Busbey Natatorium to take on Cleveland State on Friday (Nov. 10) at 3:00 p.m. for the Cleveland City College Meet. The men then host league rival Wright State while the women host Youngstown State on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 1:00 p.m.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Viking men improved to 3-0 on the year while the women's team fell to 0-3 on Saturday (Nov. 4). Here is a recap of the meet:

                Men - CSU 143 St. Bonaventure 95

                 (Nov. 4, 2006, St. Bonaventure, N.Y.)

Senior Bjorn Schantz set St. Bonaventure pool records in the 500 and 1,000 free events and senior Chris Dalman added a pool record score in the three-meter dive as Cleveland State won all but two of the meet's 13 events. Sophomores Nedim Nisic (200 free, 200 fly) and Marko Milenkovic (50 and 100 free) each added two individual titles while also swimming on two winning relay teams.

                Women - St. Bonaventure 171, CSU 53

The short-handed Vikings swam without senior Marianne Lionell and sophomore Jen MacLauchlan and the Bonnies took advantage by winning every event. Juniors Lesley Jones and Deanna Raedel led the Vikings, as Jones placed second in the 100 free and third in the 50 free while Raedel finished second in the 200 breast and third in the 200 free.

PREVIEWING THE WOMEN'S TEAM: The CSU women have their sights set on competing for a Horizon League championship after scoring a school-record 358.5 points en route to a fifth place finish at last year's championship. The squad is loaded with young but experienced swimmers, including 10 returning letterwinners on the roster. Marianne Lionell is the team's only senior and is the top returning swimmer in five events. She posted team bests last year in the 50, 100-  and 200-meter freestyle events. She is also the team's leader in the 100 breast (1:06.13) and 200 breast (2:27.19) and swam on four of CSU's five relay teams.

Sophomore Katie Bellew holds the school record in the 100 fly (:57.50) and is the also the team's top swimmer in the 200 fly (2:08.92) and the 200 IM (2:11.89). CSU's sophomore twins, Kristine and Sandra Bunker, also return after each posted a solid freshman campaign. Kristine will add depth to the Viking sprint corps (50 and 200 free, 100 and 200 fly) while Sandra is the team's top returning distance swimmer, leading in the 1,650 Free (18:16.80) and 1,000 Free (10:55.35). Junior Lesley Jones and sophomore Jen MacLauchlan each are coming off solid seasons and can challenge the top times in the sprint events.

After battling a host of injuries leading up to the season, MacLauchlan has returned to the lineup in the 100 back (:59.40) and Jones is among the team's best 50 and 100 free swimmers and swam on four relay teams last year. Redshirt freshman Lauren Bullard and freshman Meagan Seaman give the squad a chance to capture diving points.

LEHTO ON THE CSU WOMEN: "We had some good individual performances on Saturday, but not having everyone on our team able to swim hurt us. We knew St. Bonaventure would be tough, but with our lineup having to be restructured, overall some of our best times just weren't there."

PREVIEWING THE MEN'S TEAM: The CSU men's squad takes aim at defending its Horizon League championship with 15 returning letterwinners from last year. Headlining the returnees is senior Bjorn Schantz, last year's Horizon League Swimming Athlete of the Year. Schantz, who was also named the Men's Outstanding Swimmer at the league championships, set school records in the 200 free (1:39.15) and 500 free (4:24.65) last year while his time in the 500 was also good for the Horizon League Championship record. He was also the anchor leg of CSU's championship 800 free relay team that also posted a school-record time.

Several Vikings provide support, including sophomores Marko Milenkovic and Nedim Nisic. Milenkovic is among the team's top sprinters while Nisic is the team's top returnee in the butterfly, posting team-best times last year in the 100 (:49.86) and 200 fly (1:50.76).

Sophomore Stef Potgieter, along with Milenkovic and junior Dave Duecker, leads the team in the breaststroke events. Potgieter's time of :57.68 was the team's best in the 100 breast, and he was just a second behind Milenkovic (2:05.05) at the top of the 200 breast list with a time of 2:06.19. Despite losing two-time league diving champion Thatcher Carr to graduation, theVikings still have two talented divers that can defend the league title. Senior Chris Dalman has yet to lose a diving event this year. He set the one-meter school record with a score of 415.40 on Feb. 4 last year against UIC. Junior Dan Baiko also returns and the two divers will push each other towards league diving supremacy.

MORTON ON THE CSU MEN: "With St. Bonaventure being the defending Atlantic 10 champions, I told our guys they weren't just representing our school, but also the Horizon League. I was impressed with the way we conducted ourselves. We really responded in a positive way."

`BJORN' TO SWIM... : Bjorn Schantz, the reigning Horizon League Athlete of the Week, has won seven individual events in the season's first three meets, including three apiece in the 500 and 1,000 free. He posted season-best times and pool records in the 500 free (4:36.74) and in the 1,000 free (9:28.49) against the Bonnies on Saturday (Nov. 4), while also swimming on the winning 400 free relay team.

...BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: Schantz, an international business major who owns a 3.9 GPA, was named the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 24 after winning the 500 and 1,000 free against on Oct. 21 against Valparaiso.

MISSING IN ACTION: CSU was a bit short-handed on Saturday (Nov. 4), as it entrered the meet against the defending A-10 champ Bonnies without senior Marianne Lionell and sophomore Jen MacLauchlan. Lionell is the team's top swimmer in the 200 free (2:00.09 on Oct. 21), the 100 breast (1:07.82 on Oct. 28) and the 200 breast (2:32.80 on Oct. 21). She also owns the team's best effort in the 200 IM (2:18.79 on Oct. 28). MacLauchlan has competed in just one meet this season (on Oct. 28 at UW-Green Bay) and is the team's best backstroke swimmer.

SUPREME NEDIM: Nedim Nisic continued his dominance in the butterfly, posting a first-place time of 1:55.51 in the 200 fly on Saturday at St. Bonaventure. Nisic, who owns the team's top time in the 200 fly (1:55.17 on Oct. 21), has won every fly event in which he has swam. He also added a first place finish in the 200 free (1:45.25) and is third on the team in that event as well.

MARKO...POLO: Marko Milenkovic owns the team's top times in all three sprint freestyle events after recording a :21.86 in his first place 50 free swim on Saturday. The sophomore alsohas the best times in the 100 free (46.71 on Oct. 21) and the 200 free (1:43.21 on Oct. 21) while holding down the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay team.
