Men's Swimming In Second Through Three Events
Feb. 23, 2005 Brown Deer, Wis. - Through the first three events of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships, the Cleveland State men's team stands in second place with a score of 102, while the women's squad finds themselves in fifth with 69 points.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan Klaus, Johan Norling, Adam Wroblewski and Daniel Thomasson got things started for the men's team, swimming to a season-best 1:22.86 for a third-place finish. Sophomore Bjorn Schantz followed with a strong second-place showing in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:32.12, while Brady Lusk (9:48.25), Thomasson (9:52.66), Joe Badziong (9:56.36) and Khaled Elgamal (9:59.32) scored points for the Vikings. The 200 medley relay team of Pieter Pelser, Gabriel Linton, Klaus and Norling finished the day by swimming to a school-record 1:31.99 for a third-place finish.
"Overall, we ended up about where we should on the first day," men's head coach Wally Morton said. "It was a good, solid day. We want to come out tomorrow and swim faster, though."
The women's squad closed out the night on a strong note, as the 200 medley relay team scored a school-record 1:31.99 to place third. The 200 free relay team of Angie Malloy, Lesley Jones, Deanna Raedel and Marlene Przykling placed sixth in a time of 1:40.00, while Kirsty McKechnie added a fourth-place showing in the 1,000 free in a time of 10:30.75. "Kirsty swam well, but she was not as quick as she could have been," women's head coach Mike Lehto said. "It was good to see us close out the night on a good note with a quick time in the 200 medley relay." Men's diver Thatcher Carr hinted on good things to come in the one-meter preliminaries, setting a league championship-record of 376.25 for a top seed in tomorrow's finals. Carr out-scored his nearest competitor by over 80 points (376.25 to 290.95).
Wright State currently leads the men's team with a score of 131, while the UW-Green Bay women's squad leads the way with 115 points. The championship resumes tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. Central Standard Time with preliminaries for the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 freestyle, as well as the finals for the women's three-meter diving. The men's one-meter finals begin at 3:30 p.m. CST, while the finals for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay start at 6:30 p.m. CST.
