CLEVELAND - Less than two weeks after shattering the Cleveland State one-meter diving record for six dives in an exhibition showing, senior Thatcher Carr eclipsed his previous mark with a first-place 358.65 against Notre Dame and Canisius on Friday (Jan. 28) night. The Vikings out paced the Griffins in the team scoring, 193-32, but couldn't overcome the nationally-ranked Irish team, falling 137-101.

Carr took first in both diving events on the night, with his school record topping his nearest competitor by over 80 points and his three-meter score of 363.75 putting him ahead by over 70. Both scores are Horizon League top scores. He set the previous school record of 349.40 in an exhibition showing against Duquesne and Xavier on Jan. 15.

"Aside from being a great diver, Thatcher is great to work with," head diving coach Rich Karban said. "He's very coachable, and he is a great influence on our younger divers."

In the pool, the CSU swimmers easily handled Canisius and held their own with Notre Dame but could not come up with the second victory.

Sophomore Bjorn Schantz swam to a career-best and Horizon League top time in the 1,000 freestyle, completing the trip in 9:23.10 for second place. Junior Daniel Thomasson notched a win in the 200 freestyle in 1:42.55, while junior Pieter Pelser swam to a top time of 1:48.98 in the 200 back.

CSU capped the night with an exceptional performance in the 400 freestyle relay, with Thomasson, Schantz, Johan Norling and Ryan Klaus swimming a 3:08.86.

"We really swam well tonight," head coach Wally Morton said. "Last year, we couldn't get any top times against Notre Dame, and tonight we got five. Bjorn did a wonderful job, and you can't say enough about Thatcher."

Cleveland State will be in the pool tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when the men's and women's teams battle Valparaiso at Busbey Natatorium. The CSU swimming and diving alumni will be in attendance at the event and will be invited to a social at Mather Mansion following the meet.
