Men's Soccer Falls At UW-Green Bay, 1-0, On Penalty Kick

Oct. 18, 2001

Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Cleveland State (2-12, 0-6 Horizon League) gave up an early goal and could not get the equalizier, as UW-Green Bay (2-7-3, 1-2-2 Horizon League) defeated the Vikings, 1-0, yesterday afternoon. The loss was CSU's sixth this year by one goal, as well as the sixth time the Vikings have been shutout.

The Phoenix posted its goal in the ninth minute when Brian Giovinazzi was fouled by Cleveland State's Cory Pryor (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) in the penalty box to set up a penalty kick for UW-Green Bay. Lucas Stauber, who missed a penalty kick Sunday against IUPUI, buried his attempt to give the Phoenix the 1-0 lead.

The second half brought many more quality chances for the Phoenix, but luck was not on the team's side. In the 68th minute, Giovinazzi hit the near post from short range. Then, in the 74th minute, Brandon Steenlage flicked a shot past CSU senior goalkeeper James Kryger (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe), but a Viking defender was on the far post to clear the ball away. UW-Green Bay had a second penalty kick in 79th minute, taken by Kyle Rainwater, but Kryger made the stop for the Vikings.

Cleveland State had its best chance in the first half, when sophomore Josh Lidala (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) hit a corner kick that swung into the far post, but UW-Green Bay's Nick Reckinger nodded the ball away from danger.

Orin Kipp made five saves for the Phoenix in goal and posted his second straight shutout. Kryger made eight stops, including the penalty kick save in the second half.

CSU is in action again this Sunday (Oct. 21) when it hosts No. 16 UW-Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.
