CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson women's track and field team placed second at the Clemson Invitational held Saturday at the Rock Norman Track Complex. Miami (OH) tallied 140 points to edge the Lady Tigers, who scored 139 points. Appalachian State placed third with 114 points, Iowa State was fourth with 88 points, Charlotte recorded 61.75 points and East Carolina finished with 41.25 points. Clemson's Costa, Oliveira, Ulfarsdottir and 4x100m relay team qualified for the East Region Championships.

On the track, Danielle Whaley placed second in the 100m with a season-best time of 12.15, and Shannon Murray placed sixth in 12.49. Whaley won the 200m dash with a time of 24.36, while Denise Cruse took fourth in 24.85 and Lauren Nicholson was eighth with a time of 25.26. Silja Ulfarsdottir won the 400m dash, leading three other Lady Tigers in the event. Shakirah Rutherford placed third (55.52), Cruse took sixth (56.72) and Angela Thomas was seventh in 58.33. In the 800m, Laura Ann Rukat clocked a 2:29.70, and LaToya Woodberry recorded a time of 2:36.62. Casey Phillips competed in the 1500m, finishing eighth in 4:50.29. Rukat and Jennifer Barton competed in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking times of 12:33.30 and 12:51.58, respectively to finish third and fifth. Phillips placed seventh in the 5000m in 20:55.87, while Jennifer Hooten finished in 22:25.41. Lauren Nicholson was the Lady Tigers' top finisher in the 100m hurdles, placing second in a season-best 14.20. Marquita Dortch placed fourth (14.47), and Keshia Haughton took seventh with a time of 14.58. Silja Ulfarsdottir broke the tape in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 1:00.38 to win the event and qualify for the region meet, and Shakirah Rutherford finished the race in 1:03.23. Clemson's 4x100m relay team won that event with a time of 45.94, another region qualifying time, while the Lady Tigers' 4x400m relay team finished in 3:47.16 to claim that race.
 

 

Gisele Oliveira won the long jump with a season-best mark of 19'11", qualifying for the region meet. Joana Costa finished seventh with her leap of 18'2.5", and Katrina Moultrie was ninth with a mark of 17'5.5". Oliveira also won the triple jump, recording a mark of 43'9.75", another school record, personal record and regional qualifying mark. In the high jump, Lauren Nicholson cleared 5'3", and Oliveira cleared 5'1". Joana Costa cleared 12'6" to win the pole vault and also qualify for the East Region Championships. Her mark was also a career-best and places her second on the Lady Tigers' all-time list. In the shot put, Allison Bradshaw placed fifth with a mark of 41'2.25", while Mary Gosselin and Lauren Nicholson posted marks of 36'6.25" and 30'5", respectively. Krystal Woods placed fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 136'1", Mary Gosselin took seventh (125'10"), and Allison Bradshaw and Elizabeth Lord posted marks of 105'10" and 105'2", respectively. In the hammer throw, Gosselin placed fifth with her mark of 146'8", and Allison Bradshaw placed seventh (136'5"). Elizabeth Lord was the runner-up in the javelin throw (131'11"), and Krystal Woods placed fourth with a mark of 118'11". Lord's mark places her second on Clemson's all-time list in the javelin. Silja Ulfarsdottir posted a mark of 116'5", and Keshia Haughton recorded a mark of 97'9".

Clemson women's track and field will return to action next weekend at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, TN, and NC-SC All-Star Challenge (Clemson, SC).
