ATLANTA, GA - On the first day of Clemson's competition at the Georgia Tech Invitational, Tiger sophomore George Kitchens broke an 18-year-old Clemson record in the long jump. Kitchens, from Hephzibah, GA, won the long jump event with a leap of 25'10.75", breaking the former record of 25'9" set by Chris Michael in 1985. Kitchens' mark also ranks as the best in the East Region this season.
Tiger teammate Kai Maull placed third in the long jump with a mark of 24'4.25", while Derek Gilson and Matt Lombardi recorded throws of 51'8.5" and 51'8.25" in the shot put on Friday night. On the track, Ryan Fenton placed third in the 3000m steeplechase with his season-best time of 9:14.69, narrowly missing the qualifying time for the region meet. Itay Magidi finished fourth among collegiate competitors in the 1500m with a time of 3:48.78, another season-best performance. Magidi's time in the 1500m is a regional qualifying time. The Tigers' competition at the Georgia Tech Invitational continues on Saturday with the pole vault, 110m hurdles, 100m dash, high jump, 4x100m relay, 400m dash, 400m hurdles, 200m dash and concludes with the 4x400m relay.
