CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Clemson men's track and field team is in fourth place with 34 points after the first day of the 2002 ACC Championships. The Tigers qualified 14 for Saturday's final, while the Tigers tallied two second-place and two fourth-place finishes in finals on Friday.
In Friday's finals, Jason Meany recorded a time of 31:06.18 in the 10,000m run to finish fourth. Ryan Lewis was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 5.15m/16'10.75", a personal-best mark. Lewis also moves into third on Clemson's all-time list in the event with that mark. Andrew Kessler finished fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.95m/16'2.75", tying his season-best. George Kitchens added another second-place finish for the Tigers in the long jump, with a personal-best mark of 7.51m/24'7.75". Terrance McDaniel also scored for Clemson in the long jump with his mark of 7.29m/23'11", a season-best. Colt Hodge took sixth in the discus throw with a season-best mark of 49.98m/164'0", and Doug Ameigh placed seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 55.74m/182'10".
In the 100m, Dwight Thomas was the top qualifier with a season-best time of 10.33 while Airese Currie qualified with his season-best time of 10.43. Larry Griffin and Eugene Lee also qualified for Saturday's finals with times of 10.51 and 10.52, respectively. Thomas also qualified in the 200m dash with a time of 20.90. Otto Spain and Griffin also advance to the finals with times of 21.29 and 21.46, respectively. In the 400m, Ato Modibo was the top qualifier for the finals (46.46) and Spain also advanced with the second-fastest preliminary time of 46.27, another season-best mark. Marcus Hodge advances to the finals of the 800m with a time of 1:52.26, and Scott Shaw will compete in Saturday's finals in the 1500m with a time of 3:56.54. Thomas and Todd Matthews recorded the two fastest times in the preliminaries of the 110m hurdles with times of 13.74 (provisional qualifying) and 14.35, respectively. Michael Bolling will also advance! to the finals of the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 52.42.
