Experienced collegiate righthander in his first year at Clemson after transferring from Maine, where he made 26 starts and five relief appearances during the 2004 and 2005 seasons...slated to compete for the closer role in 2006 after turning heads in fall practice...rated as the fifth-best newcomer in the ACC in the preseason by Baseball America.

Head Coach Jack Leggett on Richard: "Steve is a great addition to our baseball program after transferring from Maine. He has a chance to be our closer. He has a great fastball with very good control, and he has a couple of good breaking pitches. He is one of those players who is very competitive on the mound and has very high expectations of himself. He is going to help this team win."

BEFORE CLEMSON: Played the 2004 and 2005 seasons at Maine, where he was 13-3 with a 2.49 ERA in 31 appearances (26 starts) and 170.0 innings pitched over those two years...coached by Paul Kostocopolous at Maine...attended the same college that Head Coach Jack Leggett played at and graduated from in the 1970s; Leggett was later inducted into the University of Maine Hall of Fame...was 9-1 with a 2.07 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 100.0 innings pitched in 2005...was 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 70.0 innings pitched in 2004...earned the win by pitching 6.2 scoreless innings in the 2005 Oxford Regional against Southern Mississippi; he earned Oxford Regional All-Tournament team honors...played for Chatham in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2005, where he was 3-2 with a 2.54 ERA in 46.0 innings pitched (eight starts)...lettered at Malden Catholic High School, where he was coached by Steve Freher.
