Final Stats

MEMPHIS--Three different players scored for the Christian Brothers University Bucs as they defeated NAIA powerhouse Brescia 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Signaigo Field.

The Bearcats (9-2-2) entered the game ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA's NAIA rankings, and they struck first in the fifth minute when John Benson curled a long free kick into the top-right corner of the net.

The Bucs (7-4-1) wouldn't stay down long, as Craig De Melo (Langley, B.C./Langley Secondary) lofted a pass to Ryan Peel (Mission, B.C./Hatzic Secondary) in the box, and Peel scored from the right side.

In the 53rd minute, Rasaq Kuteyi (Lagos, Nigeria/Mansfield [Texas] Summit HS) scored the game-winner as he found a loose ball and buried it in the net behind Brescia keeper Angel Abundez.

After a hat trick Friday at Martin Methodist, Matt Werakso (Wollongong, Australia) put the Bearcats away with a spectacular goal in the 61st minute.  After a foul above the right side of the box, Werakso and Brad Whitsitt (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) lined up to take the free kick.  After Whitsitt faked the free kick, Werakso used it to curl a low shot just inches inside the left post to give CBU a 3-1 lead.

The Bucs out-shot Brescia 21-17 for the match, including a 10-7 margin in shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Alex Balog (Leuven, Belgium) made six saves for CBU.

The Bucs return to Gulf South Conference action Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., to face Ouachita Baptist.
