Glennie Adams enters her fourteenth year at Chaminade University. Coach Adams led the Chaminade University volleyball program to a 17-6 finish in 2006, just missing the NCAA tournament. The Swords have gone to the NCAA tournament in the not so distant past, garnering their first ever victory in the tournament when they defeated Cal State Los Angeles in the first round of the Pacific regional just three years ago. Glennie Adams the coach can look back to Glennie Adams the player for any success she may need. The UH-Hilo graduate was a prominenet part of bringing the red and white to national prominence and a national title. During her time with the Vulcans, Adams was named first team All-American. After her career at UH-Hilo concluded, Adams continued to show her ability to bring the best out of others when she coached University High on Oahu to three straight State titles. In 1994, Coach Adams took over a struggling Chaminade program. Within three years she led the Swords to their only PacWest title. Despite an 11-1 conference record and a 21-9 overall record, the Swords were left out of the 1996 NCAA tournament. That oversight was addressed in 2002 when the Swords received their first NCAA Tournament bid when they finished 15-7 on the season. Coach Adams continued to work hard and continued to teach. In 2004, this effort paid off when the Swords finished second in the PacWest at 8-2 and 16-6 overall. This record was rewarded with the school's second invitation to the NCAA tournament and first tournament win. To cap it off, Chaminade University ended the season with a national ranking (19th), another first for the school. Off the court, Coach Adams, a former social worker, is aware of the problems of youth and the special role athletics can play. The Swords have hosted the Puuwai Momi Resident Association, with whom Coach Adams has dealt with as a result of her participation in PMRA'S Keiki Olympics. Efforts like these, along with quality student athletes, have helped to turn McCabe Gym into a vibrant, energy filled arena for each home game. As a former player, and now as a coach and administrator, Coach Adams is acutely aware of the role athletics plays for school identity and morale. This is especially critical in Hawaii, with a long history of athletic excellence at both the high school and collegiate levels. 2007 brings another challenge for Coach Adams. Graduation took away some former Swords , but returners and an exciting cast of new facesare set to live up to high expectations. Coach Adams, does not a new year as a challenge, but an opportunity. With her track record, don't bet against another season of success and excellence for the Swords.
