Babos Advances at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships

STANFORD, Calif. - Suzi Babos, of the California women's tennis team, advances to the singles round of 32, while teammate Suzi Fodor was upset in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, held at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford.

Babos, a sophomore who currently holds a No. 27 singles ranking, got the day off to a strong start for Cal, defeating 14th-ranked Alexis Gordon of Florida, 6-4, 6-3. Babos will face Robin Stephenson of Alabama tomorrow in the round of 32. Times will be announced later tonight after play concludes and will be posted on www.gostanford.com.

Fifth-seeded Zsuzsanna Fodor, the 2006 Women's Tennis Pac-10 Player of the Year and third ranked singles player in the nation, was upset by Vanderbilt's Taka Bertrand, 6-2, 6-3. Fodor ends her singles season with a 34-15 overall record.

Babos and Fodor will face Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth University in the first round of doubles action, which begins tomorrow at 2 p.m. Cal's duo currently boasts a No. 8 national ranking and earned an at-large selection and fifth seed overall into the doubles championships.
