No. 24 Cal Upsets No. 9 Miami to Advance to NCAA Round of 16

Coral Gables, Fla. - The 24th-ranked California women's tennis team upset No. 9 Miami, 4-3, in Coral Gables, Fla., to advance to the Women's NCAA Championships Round of 16. The win, which snapped a 27-match home-winning streak for the Hurricanes, improves the Golden Bears record to 14-8 overall, while Miami ends their season at 21-5.

Cal opened play taking two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. The freshmen duo of Cristina Visico and Marion Ravelojaona defeated Caren Seenauth and Patricia Starzyk on court three, 8-4.

Fellow freshmen Suzi Babos and Stephanie Kusano, ranked 37th in the nation, clinched the doubles point on court one, where they defeated Melissa Applebaum and Audrey Banada, 8-6.

The Bears took the match by sweeping the bottom-half of the singles lineup. Ravelojaona was victorious in straight sets over Starzuk, 6-3; 6-3.

Junior co-captain Jessica Shu faced Banada on court five, where she won in two sets, 7-6(4); 6-3.

For the second-consecutive match, Cal clinched the win on court six, where No. 73 Visico rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Emily Mowery, 4-6; 6-4; 6-4.

Cal will travel to the University of Georgia's Dan McGill Tennis Complex for the Women's NCAA Tennis Championships, May 19-22.
