A senior backstroker/freestyler/butterflyer from Chico, CA...was the 2000 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year...at this past summer's Olympic Trials placed third in the 50-meter free (25.40) and fifth in the 100-meter back (1:02.35)...captured the Olympic Trial semifinal in the 100 back (1:02.02)...as a junior (2000) earned Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year honors after leading Cal to NCAA titles in the 200-meter medley relay (world best 1:49.23) and 200-meter free relay (U.S. Open record 1:40.18)...set a short course world record in the 50-meter back (27.25) as a lead-off on the Bears 200-meter medley relay...also placed second in the nation in the 100-meter back (59.17) and sixth in the 100-meter butterfly (59.70)...was a member of the Pac-10 champion 200-yard free relay (Pac-10 meet record 1:30.98), 400-yard medley relay (Pac-10 meet record 3:35.71) and 200-yard medley relay (Pac-10 meet record 1:39.27)...earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic...as a sophomore (1999) helped the Bears set a school record in the 400 free relay and a then school record in the 200 medley relay (backstroke leg), placing second and third respectively at the 1999 NCAA Championship...individually, earned All-America honors with a sixth place finish in the 100 fly (career-best 53.28, fourth-best all-time Cal mark) and was an honorable mention All-American with a 10th place finish in the 100 back and 11th place finish in the 200 back (career-best 1:58.80, fifth-best all-time Cal mark)...earned honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic...as a freshman (1998) earned All-America honors as a member of the 400 free relay team which placed sixth at the NCAA Championship...was also an honorable mention All-American, placing 16th in the 100 back at the NCAAs...broke into the Cal all-time Top 10 list in five individual events-100 back, 200 back, 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly...was named the Bears Most Improved Swimmer...at Chico High School competed for the Chico Aqua Jets...was a Junior National finalist in the 50 free (2nd), 100 back (3rd), 100 fly (5th), 100 free (6th) and 200 IM (7th)...was also a Senior National qualifier in the 50 free and 100 back...earned North Valley Aquatic League All-Star and Sierra Nevada All-Star honors as well...club coach is Brian Clark of the Chico Aqua Jets...majoring in mass communications...parents are Neil Cope of Crescent City, CA and Regina Schafer of Hancock, NH...born 4/11/79 in Crescent City, CA.
