BERKELEY - For the second time this year, the Muscle Milk Athlete of the Week Award is not going to an individual. This week's Muscle Milk honoree is the men's freshman eight from the Golden Bear crew team.
The freshmen eight were one of three Cal teams to capture national titles at the IRA Regatta on the Cooper River in New Jersey. The other winners were the freshman four and the varsity four+. The freshman eight's gold medal finish marked the ninth consecutive year the Bears have finished amongst the top three crews at the IRA Regatta. In May, Cal also won its fifth consecutive Pac-10 freshman eight championship with an almost eight second victory over Washington.
This season, Cal's Freshman Eight regained control of the national title and posted an undefeated season for the second time in school history. The Bears won consecutive national titles in 2004 and 2005, but lost to Washington in 2006. Cal finished with a 3.5 second lead over Brown (5:44.736) and Washington (5:44.392). Harvard, Princeton and Yale rounded out the field.
