San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher:

On The Game
Regardless of how many shots we didn't make, had we done a better job defending, we would have won the game. We gave up too many easy baskets and didn't provide the help when we doubled on countless layups. You have to make plays on the defensive end to win games and tonight we didn't do that."

"Defense has to be the cornerstone, something that we are going to be good at every night. And at times we were but not at the consistent level that we have to have to win."

"Cal is a good defensive team. Look at their stats. They are physical, they do a nice job of not giving you straight-line cuts."

California head coach Ben Braun:

On California Defense
"You look at the defensive percentages, we held them to 35 percent (shooting) and 33 percent the first half. We kept up our defensive field-goal percentages. We didn't give up a lot of offensive rebounds except towards the end."

On San Diego native Dominic McGuire
"I thought he played solid. He moved his feet. I thought he tried to do a little too much early, but then settled down. "

On San Diego native Rod Benson
"Rod took about 35 to 37 minutes to come on, but I had a feeling that was coming. Players coming back in front of their home towns, you've got to like his enthusiasm and energy. The dunk at the end and the technical foul made things a little bit more interesting than they should have been, but it was a learning experience that I think he'll learn from. I think Rod will learn that you earn things. He got double teamed a few times and tried to make some plays rather than pass the ball. He's just going to have to work on that."

Cal ifornia Player Rod Benson
On A Close Finish and Bears' Defense
"When we played at BYU the same thing happened. We were up big but gave up some at the end. I think that helped us keep our composure tonight. Our defensive system will work against any team as long as we execute. We have four of the most athletic players in the Pac 10. We use our athleticism and try to crash the boards every time."

San Diego State Players

Marcus Slaughter
"Our rotation wasn't there on the help side. We didn't play good defense as a team. We had good execution on our offense but they played pretty good defense. We had some shots that just didn't fall for us.

On Rebounding
"Playing a zone is a little tougher to box out. But as a team, if one person doesn't block out it doesn't really matter. They are a good offensive team, I give them credit for that."
