A heady player, Gates quickly emerged as one of the team leaders upon joining the Bears has a good understanding of the game his strength is his defense, where he can play both tough man-to-man or cover the passing lanes typically draws the opponent's top perimeter player as his assignment plays the off-guard position one of Cal's top three-point threats, but needs to improve his percentage to become more effective ... plays with a lot of intensity and is not afraid to be physical on the court has averaged less than one turnover per game during his career (35 TO in 59 games).

As a Sophomore in 1999-00: Gates started 14 games for the Bears, with many of the assignments coming in the middle of the season had five straight starts from Dec. 7-29, then had seven in a row from Feb. 2-26 ranked fifth on the team with 20 three-pointers made voted second team Pac-10 All-Academic made 84.0 percent of his free throw attempts (21-25) one of his best games came against Gonzaga in the Pete Newell Challenge when he scored 11 points (4-5 FG, 1-2 3P, 2-2 FT), dished out 3 assists and helped hold the Bulldogs' Matt Santangelo to just 1-for-13 shooting from the floor (0-7 3P), forcing him into 5 turnovers tallied 12 points (4-7 3P) in the Pac-10 opener against Arizona set a career high in Cal's win at UCLA Feb. 5 with 13 points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3P, 5-5 FT) ... suffered a knee sprain late in Cal's game at Oregon Jan. 13 and sat out the next two contests vs. Oregon State and Stanford ... picked off four steals against Oklahoma in the Top of the World Classic championship game.

As a Freshman in 1998-99: Gates played in 28 of Cal's 33 games and earned starts in back-to-back games against USC and Washington in mid-January ... showed off his defensive prowess in just his second game when he swiped five steals against Eastern Washington Nov. 25 ... that total was the best of any Cal player during the year ... also had three steals three other times: vs. Coppin State Dec. 7, at BYU Dec. 19 and vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Dec. 29 ... ended the season with 28 steals (tied for third on the team) despite playing just 11.4 minutes per contest ... had his best offensive outing vs. Houston Dec. 3 when he scored 12 points, all on three-pointers (4-6 3P) ... finished the year fourth on the squad in three-pointers with 14 ... committed just 11 turnovers on the season ... saw his greatest amount of action near his hometown of Chicago when he played 25 minutes vs. DePaul at the Rosemont Horizon Nov. 28 ... played just four seconds in Cal's win over Arizona Feb. 25, but still had a huge impact on the game ... stole an inbounds pass with 3.9 seconds left in the first half and fed the ball to Geno Carlisle, who sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Cal a 12-point lead at the break ... in January, sat out the Washington State and Arizona State contests with a sore knee (bursitis) ... named the team's Co-Most Outstanding Student-Athlete at the end of the year.

High School: Gates averaged 9.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.4 steals as a senior at Whitney Young HS ... earned honorable mention all-state honors and was a third team all-city choice ... rated the No. 12 shooting guard in the country by ESPN, while Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop said Gates "could be the most underrated player in the country" ... led his team to a 31-1 record and a No. 2 national ranking from USA Today on its way to the state AA (large schools) championship ... named MVP of the Illinois state championship game on a team that featured five eventual Division I players, including 1999 national freshman of the year Quentin Richardson (DePaul) ... selected the Chicago All-Academic Player of the Year ... as a junior, averaged 8.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.8 steals while being named honorable mention all-state and helping Whitney Young to a 30-2 mark and the Chicago Public League championship.
