Cal's David Torrence Qualifies for NCAA Championships

Nov. 13, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. - California junior David Torrence has earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships Monday, Nov. 20, in Terre Haute, Ind. Torrence finished 13th at the NCAA West Regional Nov. 11 at Blue Lake Park in Fairview, Ore., in a time of 30:34.99 on the 10K course to earn his first NCAA cross contry selection.

Indiana State will host this year's national championship at LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The men's 10K race begins at 1:15 p.m. ET. The Cal men's team, which finished 10th at the NCAA West Regional, narrowly missed earning its first NCAA cross country team bid, as the top nine teams received invitations from the Bears' regional.

This marks the second straight year Cal has qualified an individual for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 2005, senior Giliat Ghebray finished 63rd at the event in a time of 30:39.5.

Torrence, who hails from Tarzana, Calif., has led the Bears in all four competitions he has entered this season. He owns three top 15 showings and hasn't finished lower than 23rd all season.
