EUGENE, Ore. - Three runners from the No. 10 California men's cross country team finished in the top 15, as the Golden Bears placed fourth overall with 112 points at the NCAA West Regional Saturday at the Springfield Country Club. The fourth-place showing tied for the best finish in school history, as the men's team also took fourth in 1989 and 1981. The Golden Bears' women's team took 9th with 328 points.
"Everyone was pleased with our performance today," said head coach Tony Sandoval. "We're going to enjoy this, but we still have a lot of work to do before the NCAA championships. Our men's team ran solid and we're excited for them. Our women's team ran very well. They did a tremendous job of coming back after the Pac-10 championships."
The three runners to finish in the top 15 were senior David Torrence and juniors Mark Matusak and Yosef Ghebray. Ghebray paced the Bears in eighth, touring the course in 30:14.55. Torrence finished right behind Ghebray in ninth at 30:19.00. Matusak took 11th with a time of 30:22.95.
Oregon won the men's team title with 47 points, and Stanford claimed the women's crown with 33 points. The Portland men (76 points) and Oregon women (72 points) placed second to earn the other automatic berths out of the West Regional to the NCAA Championships Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Freshman Chelsea Reilly once again led all Cal women's runners with a 44th-place showing, clocking in at 21:32.80 on the 6K course. Reilly also paced the Cal women at the Pac-10 championships. Senior Rebecca Yau took 52nd at 21:39.79. Two other strong performers for the Bears were freshman Rowena Tam (64th, 21:48.10) and sophomore Gabriela Rios-Sotelo (65th, 21:49.60).
