Five Bears on USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams

July 6, 2007

BERKELEY - California distance runners Mark Matusak, Matthew Miller, Yosef Ghebray and Michael Coe and junior sprinter Brook Turner earned spots on the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Division I All-Academic teams, the organization announced today.

Turner led off Cal's 4x400-meter relay that ran a 3:36.10 in the semifinal round of the NCAA Championships. A strong 400 runner who ranks seventh on Cal's all-time list with a time of 53.64, Turner also led off the 4x400 relay that ran a school-record 3:35.46 to win the event at the California Collegiate Challenge.

In the 400, she ran her lifetime-best 53.64 to take third at the California Collegiate Challenge and later took fifth in the 400 with a time of 54.32 at the NCAA West Regional. Turner also ran Cal's fastest 200 of the season with a lifetime-best 24.10 to place fourth at the Jim Click Shootout. That time places her 10th on Cal's all-time list.

Matusak and Miller, who were sophomores in 2006-07, and Ghebray and Coe, who were freshmen, competed on both the cross country and track and field teams for the Golden Bears this past season.

Ghebray made a big impact in his first year in track and field, setting a Cal freshman record of 8:05.25 when he took ninth place in the 3,000-meter run at the MPSF Indoor Championships. That time ranks Ghebray third on Cal's overall all-time list, ahead of the fourth-place Matusak's 8:06.18 that the latter ran in 2006. In the 5,000, Ghebray ranks ninth at Cal all time with a 14:03.86.

In cross country, Matusak recorded Cal's second-best finish at the Pac-10 Championships last season, placing 23rd in a time of 24:18.57.

In track, Coe also made his mark in the 3,000 with a time of 8:22.01 that ranks him 10th on the school's all-time list.

Miller, meanwhile, ran a lifetime-best 9:06.29 to take 11th place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Pac-10 Championships.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA's Men's and Women's Division I All-Academic teams, one must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark in his respective event.
