Assistant coach Phil McMullen enters his second year at Cal. McMullen is tutoring the Golden Bears pole vaulters, heptathletes, decathletes and high jumpers. He brings a decade of experience as an elite athlete to the Bears' young competitors. McMullen was ranked as the No. 4 decathlete in the United States by Track & Field News in 2004 and just missed the 2004 Athens Olympics with a fourth-place finish of 8,285 points in the decathlon at the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials. Four years earlier, he was an Olympic alternate for the Sydney Olympics after placing fourth at the 2000 U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials. In his career, the decathlete has been ranked as high as second in the United States and 12th in the world (Track & Field News 2001). In his career, he has represented the United Stats on seven international teams, including at the 2001 World Championships and 2005 World Championship. The decathlete has been ranked as high as second in the United States and 11th-best performance in the world (IAAF Rankings 2004).

McMullen graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in integrated supply management. As a collegiate athlete, the Cadillac, Mich., native was a four-time Mid-American Conference Champion in the outdoor decathlon. McMullen also recorded the seventh-best all-time NCAA pentathlon performance and was the decathlon runner-up at the 1997 NCAA Championships. McMullen rewrote every multi-event record in Western Michigan and MAC history with 4,178 points in the pentathlon and 8,008 points in the decathlon mark of 8,008.
