USF's Collier Claims AVCA All-America Accolades

South Florida's Michelle Collier becomes only the second C-USA player in league history to earn this distinction.

NEW ORLEANS – South Florida volleyball player Michelle Collier was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Third Team, as announced by the AVCA on Wednesday. The awards will be presented on Friday at the AVCA All-America/Player of the Year banquet at the New Orleans Marriott Hotel.
Collier, a two-time Conference USA Player of the Year, is only the second C-USA player in the history of the conference to earn the distinction of All-America. Sonja Gubaidulina of Louisville earned the honor in 1995.
The 5-9 senior from Recife, Brazil, connected for 738 kills in 2002 for a 5.63 kills per game average to go with her 3.42 digs per game. She set the C-USA career kill record with with 2,729 kills in 471 games played. In 2002, South Florida claimed the Conference USA Tournament title and a share of the regular season crown. The Bulls advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to Florida, 3-1. It marked the Bulls’ sixth NCAA appearance in the last eight years. South Florida finished the 2002 season with a 30-7 overall mark, posting its second 30-plus win season in school history. (USF posted a 34-14 record in 1986).
