South Florida’s head coach Nancy Mueller was selected as the AVCA/Tachikara Midwest Region Coach of the Year, as announced Wednesday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Mueller is a two-time recipient of this award, winning it in 2000, and only the second coach in C-USA history to earn this honor. Former USF head coach Perry Hankins won it in 1996 and 1997.
"It is an honor to receive the Midwest Region Coach of the Year award," said Mueller. "To be recognized by your peers is an achievement in its own right. Our program is successful not because of me but because I surround myself with talented assistants and talented players."
Muller led South Florida to the Conference USA Tournament title and a share of the regular season crown. The Bulls advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to Florida, 3-1. It marked the Bulls second NCAA appearance under Mueller and sixth in the last eight years. South Florida finished the 2002 season with a 30-7 overall mark, posting its second 30-plus win season in school history. (USF posted a 34-14 record in 1986). Mueller has coached the Bulls to a 94-40 record (.701) in her four years at South Florida. She was also selected as the 2002 Conference USA Coach of the Year.
