WILMINGTON, N.C. - - Paced by career-highs of 31 kills, 76 attempts and four aces from senior Kelley Wernert, the East Carolina volleyball team defeated UNCW 3-1 on Tuesday evening inside Hanover Hall. Wernert now owns the record for most kills in a single game in program history as she accounted for more than half of ECU's 60 kills on the evening. She also notched her fourth-straight double-double as the Hoffman Estates, Ill. native added 10 digs. The Pirates even their record at 6-6 while the Seahawks drop to 3-8 on the season. In addition to Wernert's kills, sophomore Melissa Zentner put down seven balls while fellow sophomore Stephanie Turner slapped six. Koop recorded 44 assists while adding her first-career solo block and six digs. Monroe contributed 17 digs and has recorded double-digit digs in 11 of 12 contests this season. The match also marks the seventh-consecutive contest in which ECU has matched or out-dug its opponent. The Pirates will compete in their final regular-season tournament when they head to the nation's capital to begin play at the George Washington Invitational. ECU will open against the host Colonials on Friday at 7 p.m. before squaring off against Howard and Hartford at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday. SOUTHERN MISS 3, NICHOLLS STATE 1 HATTIESBURG - Morgan Johnson and Mari Ruddick posted a match-high 15 kills as Southern Miss held on for a 3-1 win over Nicholls State, 30-17, 30-19, 29-31, 31-29. Ashley Petrinec added a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Jillian Neave had 49 assists and 13 digs, as Amy Flarity tallied 12 digs and Maia Ivanova added 10 digs. Aaliyah Muhammad led Nicholls with 13 kills, followed closely by Amy Beshir and Kindra Halverson with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Southern Miss will return to action on Friday when it competes in the Alabama State Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. The Golden Eagles open the tournament against Alabama A&M at 9 a.m. before facing Southern University at 2:30 p.m. Southeastern closes out the tournament on Saturday against Alabama State in a 11:30 a.m. match before facing Mississippi Valley State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
SMU 3, UTSA 0 DALLAS (SMU)--The SMU volleyball team is back on track, defeating UTSA in three straight games Tuesday night, improving their record to 8-4. Two Mustangs recorded double-doubles on the evening. Senior outside hitter Rachel Giubilato notched her eighth double-double, with 16 kills and 13 digs, while junior setter Stefanie Kons had 33 assists and 10 digs. The Mustangs hit the road this weekend to take on Syracuse, Holy Cross and New Hampshire at the New Hampshire Invitational. The Mustangs return home Friday, Sept. 21 to begin conference play against Marshall in the regular season's only televised match. NEW MEXICO STATE 3, UTEP 0 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The UTEP volleyball team fell to I-10 rival New Mexico State, 3-0 (30-10, 30-20, 30-25) at the Pan American Center on Tuesday. UTEP drops to 6-5 while NMSU improves to 8-2. It was the sixth-straight loss to the Aggies in front of 2,049 fans, since the 3-1 upset on Sept. 28, 2004. NMSU leads the series 48-21-1. UTEP hit .015 for the match while recording 29 kills to the Aggies's 45. NMSU ended the match hitting .277. The Miners were led by Amy Sanders who registered eight kills for the match. The two teams will meet again for round two on Oct. 30 in El Paso. UTEP will open Conference USA action tomorrow against Tulane at 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
