Blazers Top Eastern Kentucky, Fall to Georgia at Outback Steakhouse Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. - The UAB volleyball team (2-1) topped Eastern Kentucky (1-2) 3-1 and fell to Georgia (2-0) 3-1 in the final day of play at the Outback Steakhouse Invitational held on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The Blazers fell to Georgia in their first match of the day 30-23, 30-18, 28-30, 30-19. Senior outside hitter Shelly Greene led the way for UAB, posting 20 kills, a .333 hitting percentage and 11 digs. Freshman setter Jessica Liptak added 45 assists.

The Bulldogs were led by Erin Gornes, who had 21 kills, hit for .515 and had eight digs, and Kilee Goetz, who had 61 assists.

UAB topped Eastern Kentucky 30-26, 30-26, 22-30, 30-27 in the Blazers' final match of the day. Sophomore Martina Shields had 27 kills, hit for .480 and posted five digs. Liptak added 54 assists and Greene contributed 12 kills and 17 digs.

Courtney Huyser led Eastern Kentucky with 15 kills 10 digs and three total blocks, and Sharon Moreno posted 36 assists, hit for .455, had six kills and seven digs.

The Blazers posted a 2-1 overall record at the tournament. UAB's other victory came Friday with a 3-2 decision over Jacksonville 30-25, 26-30, 35-33, 25-30, 15-7.

UAB returns home to Bartow Arena Tuesday to face Middle Tennessee (2-2) at 7 p.m.
