ATHENS, Ga. - Marshall's first participant in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Tournament, Kellie Schmitt, had her season come to an end this afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex after Theresa Logar of Stanford defeated the sophomore, 6-2, 6-1, in first round action on the campus of the University of Georgia.

Schmitt ended her singles season with an 18-7 record. Logar, who was a 2006 singles tournament semifinalist, will meet Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt. Newman defeated Laura Vallverdu of the University of Miami (Fla.), 6-4, 6-3.

Logar, who defeated Schmitt for the second time this season, jumped on the Pittsburgh, Pa., native with an early break to make the score, 2-0. Schmitt responded and broke back, but could not capitalize on her own serve, as Logar took a commanding 3-1 lead. The Cardinal senior would go on to win the first set, 6-2.

Logar would only surrender one game to Schmitt in the second set, winning the match, 6-2, 6-1.

"We are very proud of Kellie for making it to this level of competition," said Marshall head coach John Mercer. "She ran into a really good player today, and probably didn't play her best. But, the great thing for us is that she has two years left to get even better and to build on this experience."

Schmitt, who claimed Conference USA's automatic bid to the tournament, returns with six other letterwinners from this year's Thundering Herd squad for 2007-08.
