Marshall Women's Tennis Continues Play at the East Regional Championship

NORFOLK, Va. - The Marshall women's tennis team participated at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Women's Regional Championship hosted by Old Dominion University on Sunday. Marshall's junior No. 3 seeded Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the lone Thundering Herd singles player to advance to the quarterfinals during Sunday action. "We competed well and went in a good direction of play today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. Schmitt took a victory in the singles round of 64 against Princeton's Rebecca Parks, 6-2, 6-1. Then she defeated Binghampton's Anna Edelman, 6-3, 6-1, in the singles round of 32. Schmitt will compete for a spot in the singles quarterfinals Monday in the round of 16 at 9 a.m. Marshall's No. 30 seeded junior Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) was defeated by VCU's Vera Petrashevich, 6-4, 7-6, 8-6 in the singles round of 64. In the doubles round of 16, the No. 3 seeded Schmitt/Soor defeated Virginia's No. 9 seeded Rales/Stevens, 8-1, to advance to the doubles quarterfinals. The doubles quarterfinals match is set for 1 p.m. Monday. The Herd's pair of sophomore Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) with freshman Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) was defeated by Yale's No. 8 seeded duo Clark/Ritz, 8-6, in the doubles round of 16. "We hope to continue with wins tomorrow," coach Mercer added. Championship competition will continue through Tuesday, Oct. 23 with all matches played at Old Dominion University.
