CO-SWIMMERS OF THE WEEK
A pair of sophomores share the spotlight as Conference USA delivers its first Swimmer of the Week honor for the 2004-05 season. Houston's Szintia Szanto received her first weekly honor as she led the Cougars in meets against in-state rivals Rice and Texas. Heather Meng of Louisville also claimed her first conference accolade after posting her best dual meet time ever against Eastern Illinois earlier this month.
Szintia Szanto, Houston
Sophomore, Budapest, Hungary (Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium)
Szanto won a pair of individual swimming events against cross-town rival Rice last week. She was the only Cougar to win multiple events against the Owls as she finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.08 and claimed the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly. Szanto's time of 2:05.23 was more than four seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Heather Meng, Louisville
Sophomore, Turnersville, New Jersey (Washington Township)
Meng was a driving force behind the 200-yard medley relay team that beat Eastern Illinois earlier this month. She also swept the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly vs. EIU. Against Big Ten opponent Illinois, Meng won the 200-breast and 200-IM, while posting her best dual meet time ever in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.10).
DIVER OF THE WEEK
Collecting her second career C-USA weekly award, Anna Kiess was named Conference USA Diver of the Week for the first title awarded this season. The 2004 Freshman Diver of the Year proves to be a key force behind this year's Cougar squad.
Anna Kiess, Houston
Sophomore, Berlin, Germany (Coubertin Gymnasium)
Kiess swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events in Houston's season-opening dual meets against Texas and Rice. She added 312.83 points on the 3-meter board and 280.20 points on the 1-meter board to claim top honors against the Longhorns. The following day, Kiess returned to tally more points with 268.94 from the 3-meter event and took top honors in the 1-meter event with 300.23 points. Her 1-meter score against the Owls set a new personal career high.
