Championship Information
The TCU men’s and women’s teams are leading after the first day of the Conference USA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship and Men’s Invitational at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
On the women’s side, the Horned Frogs are first with a score of 232. Houston (173) is in second, while Tulane, competing in its first C-USA Championship, stands in third place with a score of 157. East Carolina (144), Cincinnati (138), Louisville (110) and Saint Louis (88) round out the top seven.
On the men’s side, TCU is first with a score of 285 points, while East Carolina follows in second (202) and Louisville is ranked third with a score of 172.50. Saint Louis (123) and Cincinnati (116.50) follow in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
TCU’s women opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Erin Irons, Aimee Moreau, Leann Cathcart and Erica Tate set a meet record, notching an NCAA provisional time of 1:33.78. East Carolina followed in second with a time of 1:35.17.
On the men’s side, the Horned Frogs claimed the 200 freestyle relay, marking the third consecutive time that TCU has won the event at the C-USA Invitational. Yousif Del Valle, Collin Sandifer, Mitch Loper and David Tietze finished with a time of 1:22.39.
In the 500 freestyle, Ann Degenstein of Cincinnati defended her league crown, posting a time of 4:56.51, while TCU’s Keleigh Wentworth (4:56.54) and Tulane’s Leslie Christian (4:58.94) followed in second and third place, respectively.
TCU’s Craig Chapman, who is the reigning C-USA champion in the 100 and 200 backstroke, added another league honor, taking first place in the 500 freestyle event (4:28.28). Louisville’s Matt Lees came in second with a time of 4:37.69 and Andy Donovan of TCU placed third (4:35.20).
East Carolina’s Diane Parker remained as the C-USA champion for the third consecutive year in the 200 individual medley after notching an NCAA provisional time of 2:03.10. Houston’s Szinti Szanto finished second (2:04.70), while Cincinnati’s Louise Gowens (2:05.15) and Tricia Rye (2:06.63) claimed third and fourth place, respectively.
David Gustavsson of Cincinnati defended his league crown, placing first in the 200 individual medley with a meet record time of 1:49.30, while Louisville’s Kleber Ihara followed in second (1:50.17).
Tulane claimed its first-ever C-USA individual event after Linda McEachrane recorded an NCAA provisional time of 23.08 to finish first in the 50 freestyle. On the men’s side, Cincinnati’s Ryan Yearwood picked up his third C-USA title of his career, claiming honors in the 50-yard freestyle (20.57).
The Cincinnati’s team of Aimee Moreau, Leann Cathcart, Tiffany Strawn and Erin Irons were victorious in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:48.66. On the men’s side, TCU (Craig Chapman, Aran Bean, Aaron McLachlan and David Tietze) won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:19.60.
Houston continued its dominance in the women’s diving events. Azul Almazan placed first (55.40), while teammate Anna Kiess notched a score of 518.65 on the three-meter springboard. In three years of the C-USA Championship, the Cougars have not lost a diving event.
On the men’s one-meter board, TCU’s Kelly McCain placed first (302.95), while Richard Marschner of Louisville followed in second (257.30).
The second day of the C-USA Championship gets underway on Friday with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. (CST).
