2005 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational: Day One Results

The 2005 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational got underway on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Houston, Texas. TCU leads on the women's side with a total of 80 points, followed by Louisville (66), Tulane (62), East Carolina (62), Houston (54), Cincinnati (54) and Saint Louis (50). On the men's side, East Carolina is in first place with 117 points, followed by Louisville (112), TCU (89), Cincinnati (79) and Saint Louis (71).

The half-day opener began with the 1-meter men’s diving and followed up with the finals in the men’s and women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, 1-meter men’s diving and men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relay.

TCU’s junior diver Kelly McCain jump-started the four-day championship in the 1-meter men’s diving preliminaries with a score of 290.40 en route to capturing a second-place finish later in the day. McCain finished behind Louisville’s freshman Robbie Lewis, who posted a 298.50 score in the men’s 1-meter diving finals.

In the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, TCU’s tandem of Leann Cathcart, Karen Sandifer, Aimee Moreau and Erica Tate grabbed the win with Conference USA Championship record time of 1:33.01. The Horned Frogs held the original record of 1:33.78, which was set in last year’s meet.

Cincinnati’s team of Ryan Yearwood, David Gustavsson, Marcel Kleiner and Enrique Bayata won the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with another meet record time of 1:20.58.

The final event of the evening, the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, was highlighted by TCU’s relay squad (Rikki Covey, Emily Duerringer, Tara Sullivan and Karen Sandifer). The young team had a time of 7:25.96, which also set a C-USA Championship meet record.

The 2005 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 24 with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. (CST). Wednesday’s finals are slated for 6 p.m. For a complete list of results, please go to:
