ECU Splits Dual Swim Meet with UMBC

Junior Diane Parker and sophomore Lucy Hicks each won two events to lead the East Carolina women's team to a victory and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County men's team held off the ECU men in the final event of the day for the win as ECU and UMBC spilt a dual meet at Minges Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. The Lady Pirates defeated UMBC, 134-109, while the Retriever men won, 127-114.
"It was an outstanding dual meet against probably one of the top teams on our schedule," ECU head swimming coach Rick Kobe said. " They're an absolutely fast swim team. The girls had a great meet. It wasn't an easy meet. The guys went down to the last relay. It's the third year in a row it's gone down to the last relay. We're real happy about the way we swam. Now we have to get ready for William & Mary next weekend."

Parker won the 200 IM in 2:06.92 and the 100 freestyle in 53.10. Hicks took first in both diving events. She scored 219.45 in t 3-meter diving and 204.23 in 1-meter diving. Sophomore Holly Williams won the 1000 freestyle (10:23.47) while fellow sophomore Adrienne Williams took first in the 50 freestyle (24.80). Freshman Kate Gordon continued to swim well for ECU winning the 200 butterfly (2:05.06). ECU's 400 freestyle relay team of Gordon, Courtney Felker, Adrienne Williams and Lindsay Holman won the event in 3:37.06.

UMBC registered wins from Agnieszka Stanislawska in the 200 freestyle (1:53.92), Astrid Sperling in the 200 backstroke (2:03.31), Jessica Proson in the 500 freestyle (5:07.89) and Lindsey Prather in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.33). UMBC's 400 medley relay team of Sperling, Prather, Holly Wittsack and and Stanislawska won the event in 3:55.76.

On the men's side, UMBC entered the final event - the 400 freestyle relay leading ECU, 114-104. UMBC placed two teams in the top three to win the relay and the meet, 127-114. Carlos Canepa and Brad Green led the Retrievers. Canepa won the 500 freestyle (4:38.98) and 1000 freestyle (9:44.48). Green placed first in the 50 freestyle (20.99) and 100 freestyle (46.33).

Casey Cronin paced ECU winning the 200 breaststroke (2:08.52) and 200 freestyle (1:41.18). Sophomore Robbie Derr won 1-meter diving scoring 282.08 while Greg Detwiler won 3-meter diving scoring 255.98. ECU's 400 medley relay team of Kelly Hendrick, Kenny Flory, Andrew Dragunas and Matt Walker won in 3:31.25.

ECU will regroup and return to action next weekend when the Pirates travel to William & Mary for a dual meet.
