UC Women's Swimming and Diving Falls to Miami (Ohio) and Kenyon
Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams packed a one-two punch at the Miami dual meet with Kenyon on Friday. The men overcame Kenyon 148-110 but fell to Miami 164-125. The women fell to Miami 182-112 and Kenyon 135-127.
The Bearcats captured the number one and two spots in the men’s 100 backstroke when Enrique Bayata touched the wall first in 51.53, with Dan Goldberg right behind in 53.73. The women tied for first place in the very next event when both Tricia Rye and Emma Gustafsson finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.64. Ann Degenstein and Louise Gowens were the next to capture the top spots with Degenstein finishing first in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.79 and Gowens placing second in 2:10.49.
David Gustavsson and Ryan Yearwood were the top in the 100 freestyle with Gustavsson touching the wall in 45.88 in the 100 freestyle while Yearwood finished in 46.31. Bayata and Goldberg would dominate the second backstroke event of the evening with Bayata finishing in 1:51.99 and Goldberg in 1:55.08. Gustafsson and Rye would also dominate their second breaststroke event with Gustafsson (2:20.76) out-touching Rye (2:22.77) by two second en-route to her second first place finish of the night. Degenstein and freshman Karen Brasier would be the final one-two finish for the Bearcats when Degenstein won the 100 butterfly in 58.02 with Brasier on her heals in 59.01.
Gustavsson also was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:42.21) and the 100 butterfly (50.06) while Yearwood captured first in the 50 freestyle (20.99) finishing the race just one second slower than the school record. Carlo Piccio was first in the 400 IM on the men’s side in 4:08.11 and Nelly Jorgensen won the 100 freestyle for the women (53.06). The men’s 200 Medley Relay was also victorious.
Cincinnati returns home to Keating Natatorium on the campus of St. Xavier high school to host Wright State on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. for senior day. The meet will be the final home event of the year for the Bearcats.
