IRVING, Texas - Houston capped its winter training with an impressive sweep of Stony Brook, Puget Sound and St.Cloud State on Wednesday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Center. Competing in a variety of relay events only, the Cougars, who improved to 8-3 overall this season in dual meets, enjoyed 41-13 wins over both Stony Brook and Puget Sound and a 28-26 thriller over St. Cloud State. She also participated in the one-meter diving competition posting a score of 187.70, but didn't qualify for the finals. Freshman Bekah Juarez also competed in the two-day event. She tallied a score of 129.25 on the three-meter board and 120.25 on the one-meter board, but fell short of reaching the finals in both events. East Carolina returns to dual meet competition against UMBC on January 19. The Pirates host their next dual meet at Minges Natatorium on January 26 against Duke. HOUSTON Competing in a variety of relay events only, the Cougars, who improved to 8-3 overall this season in dual meets, enjoyed 41-13 wins over both Stony Brook and Puget Sound and a 28-26 thriller over St. Cloud State. The Cougars finished first or second in five of the six events in which they competed to take the wins. The team of Andrea Pa'lmai, Doreen Polotzek, Andrea Kells and Sasha Schwendenwein started the meet on a high note, winning the 400-yard medley relay event with a time of 4:04.44, nearly six seconds faster than its closest competitor. The team of Schwendenwein, Pa'lmai and freshman Paige Bissett claimed top honors in the 150-yard backstroke with a clocking of 1:23.91, nearly five seconds ahead of the closest competition. Then, Schwendenwein, Pa'lmai, Bissett and freshman Brittany Copeland finished first in the 500-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:42.69, more than nine seconds ahead of their closest competitor. Schwendwein was a member of three first-place teams, while Pa'lmai and Bissett were a part of two winning teams. The Cougars return to action during the weekend of Jan. 18-19 with a trip to the Dallas area. The weekend starts at 4 p.m., Jan. 18 when the Cougars face North Texas in Denton. From there, the team wraps up its stay in North Texas at 1 p.m., Jan. 19, at No. 12 SMU. MARSHALL In the freestyle mile a pair of Herd swimmers set new bests. Senior Ashley McIlvain led the group with, while Sophomore Jenny Johnsson set a new lifetime-best in the event, clocking in at 17:44.44. The 800-freestyle team also set a season best with a time 7:55.90. On day two, senior breaststroker Michaela Sceli set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke for the second time this season with a time of 1:04.17 on her way to a second-place finish. Fellow senior Erin Hill also set a season-best in the event, finishing in 1:08.33. A day after breaking her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke Sceli broke her Marshall best of 2:20.71 in the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.54. Senior Lauren Goodwin also set a lifetime-best in the event, clocking in at 2:24.39. Marshall returns to the pool Saturday, January 12 when it hosts Akron in Huntington in a dual meet scheduled at 11 a.m. CST. RICE As a team Rice finished fourth overall with a final total of 727 points. The Owls managed to close the gap on third place with some strong showings in the distance and backstroke events and the foursome of Carlyann Miller, Keri Hyde, Pam Zelnick and Diane Gu took second place in the 400-freestyle relay and finished ahead of 38 other teams from 21 schools at the meet. In Massengale's first time to race in the mile this season, the Alma, Ark., native posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:37.65 to win the rugged distance race over 60 other competitors entered in the event. Her time was just two seconds off her school record. Not only did Massengale finish a convincing 30 seconds ahead of second place, she sparked a Rice charge in the event as Owl swimmers claimed three of the top nine spots and five of the top 23 places. The Owls will next be in action when they hostNo. 6 Texas A&M in a dual meet in Houston on January 11. No. 12 SMU Petra Klosova picked up the first win of the afternoon for the Mustang swimmers, swimming a 50.54 in the 100 free, qualifying her for NCAA consideration. Angela San Juan Cisneros followed suit, finishing the 100 fly in 56.75. Elzanne Werth and Justine Clark finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 fly, giving the Mustangs all available points in that event. Anja Carman took first in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:21.02, good for NCAA consideration. Jennifer Basel and Devon Callaghan finished right behind Carman, taking the points for their two-three finish. Capping the afternoon was the 400 free relay team of Candace Blackman, Jennifer Blackman, Klosova and San Juan Cisneros, who completed the course in 3:22.88, qualifying them for NCAA consideration. Audra Egenolf won both the one-meter and three-meter boards. On the one-meter board, Egenolf scored 264.60, almost 30 points higher than her nearest competitor. Britney Yancey came in third on the one-meter with a score of 193.20. Egenolf also took first on the three-meter, scoring 270.75. Yancey placed third in that event as well, scoring 232.90. The 400 medley relay team of Carman, Callaghan, San Juan Cisneros and Blackman came in third in 3:46.95. Katie Roberts placed third in the 1000 free, finishing in 10:10.39. C. Blackman took second in the 200 free in 1:49.45. Carman finished second in the 100 back in 56.39. and also took second in the 200 back, touching the wall in 1:58.89. Basel finished third in the 200 breast in 2:20.63. J. Blackman laced third in the 500 free, stopping the clock in 4:52.28, good for NCAA consideration. The Mustangs are back in action Jan. 12 as they take on Texas A&M and Auburn in a double-dual meet in College Station.
