Charlotte Names Smith Assistant Softball Coach
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers head softball coach Aimee DeVos announced today that Megan Smith has been hired as assistant coach.
Smith joins the 49ers after two years as head softball coach at Young Harris, a junior college in Georgia. Last season, she coached the team to a school-record 45 wins, finishing the year 45-16. The team also posted offensive records in batting average and home runs as a pitching record for strikeouts in a season. At the end of the year, her players filled five of the 11 spots on the all-region team.
"We are very excited to add Megan to the 49ers' staff," DeVos said. "She brings a lot of enthusiasm to the team and great experience as a head coach at the junior college level. She will be a great recruiter for us with her coaching ties in Georgia and North Carolina."
Prior to beginning her coaching career at Young Harris, Smith worked as a graduate assistant at Tennessee, where she was responsible for teaching 12 physical activity classes per year, including softball. She also worked coaching clinics at North Carolina, her alma mater, and served as an intern with the Durham Dragons of the Women's Professional Softball League.
At North Carolina, she played four years on the softball team. As the Tar Heels' third baseman, she set the single-game record for runs batted in and ranks among the program's career leaders in assists. She was a three-time ACC Honor Roll selection and was named to the Dean's List twice.
