DePaul One Win Away From NCAA Softball World Series

Jenny Doezie

DePaul blanked cross-town rival Northwestern 4-0 Friday afternoon in game one of its NCAA Super Regional best-of-three series Friday at Flames Field on the Illinois-Chicago campus. The Blue Demons need just one more win to earn a berth to the NCAA Softball College World Series.

Sophomore Megan Huitink posted her third shutout of the postseason limiting the Wildcats to just six hits at Flames Field on the Illinois-Chicago campus. Huitink fanned five and walked just one in the complete-game effort.

DePaul opened the scoring in the first after centerfielder Linda Secka delivered a run-scoring single. Third baseman Jenny Doezie then extended the lead to three with a two-run homer in the third. Designated hitter Kate Sheaks capped the scoring in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

Huitink pitched out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings when she allowed a pair of Wildcats to reach base in each frame.

Game two of the series is set for 5 p.m., CT, on Saturday at Flames Field. Game three will be played immediately following the conclusion of game two (if necessary).
