Coming on the heels of its first Conference USA Tournament Championship, DePaul learned on Monday who its first-ever NCAA Tournament opponent would be. The Blue Demons will face Purdue of the Big Ten at University of Illinois on Friday. DePaul earned the league's automatic bid in dramatic fashion by winning a penalty kick shootout, 4-3, over Saint Louis in the championship match of the tournament last Saturday in Charlotte. Read about this and more in the C-USA Women's Soccer Notebook.
C-USA TOURNAMENT RECAP
Sixth-seeded DePaul (14-6-2) captured the 2003 Conference USA Tournament crown by winning a penalty-kick shootout with fifth-seeded Saint Louis (14-5-3), 4-3, on Saturday at Charlotte’s Transamerica Field. The Blue Demons have earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the first berth in the program’s eight-year history.
SLU struck first late in the first half when Trisha Neidenbach served the ball into the box and Christie Cigno slid the ball past a diving Lindsay Deason in the 45th minute to give the Billikens a 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Demons responded quickly after the halftime break when Julianne Sitch placed a ball into the 18-yard box for a streaking Margo Sackmaster, who connected on a shot from 15-yards out in the 48th minute to tie the match, 1-1.
After no deciding goal in the two extra periods, the match would be decided on penalty kicks, the third match to be decide by the penalty-kick format in this year’s tournament. DePaul clinched the title when Lauren Spacht, Erin Davern, Sitch and Amber Prindle converted their penalty kick attempts to give the Blue Demons a 4-3 advantage.
DePaul’s Sitch and goalkeeper Lindsey Deason were named the tournament’s offensive and defensive MVPs. NEWS & NOTES
DePaul To Face Purdue In NCAA Tournament – DePaul, making its first NCAA Tournament appearance will square off with Purdue of the Big Ten on Friday in opening-round action at University of Illinois in Champaign.
The Blue Demons and Boilermakers have met four times with Purdue winning all four meetings, including the last at DePaul, 2-0, in 2001.
DePaul is one of 10 teams making their inaugural appearance in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament and one of five teams from the state of Illinois in the event.
Conference USA has a representative in the NCAA Tournament every year since 1997.

The New Kids – Last Saturday was the first time that either DePaul or Saint Louis had advanced to the Conference USA Women’s Soccer Tournament championship match.
It also marked the first time in the nine-year history of the conference tournament that Charlotte, Cincinnati or Marquette did not win the C-USA post-season women’s soccer crown.
UAB Claims First C-USA Title – The UAB women's soccer team earned its first Conference USA Championship regular-season title with a 2-0 victory over USF in Tampa on Oct. 31.
Stingy on Defense – Of Saint Louis’ 14 wins this year, 13 had been via the shutout. In fact, the Billikens only allowed one score, giving up a goal to Louisville in a 2-1 home victory. SLU’s 13 shutouts this season tops the old mark of 12, set in 2002.
On The Winning Track – DePaul’s 14 wins are a program single-season record, eclipsing the old mark of 10 victories set in 2002. The Blue Demons are a combined 24-14-2 over the last two years, the most successful two-year period in the program’s eight seasons.
That’s Never Happened Before – For the first time in tournament history, the opening day saw three of the four quarterfinal matches go to double overtime. Even more remarkable is that two of those contests had to be decided on penalty kicks.
Seventh-seeded Tulane advanced 3-1 on penalty kicks over second-seeded TCU. Top-seed UAB won its penalty-kick shootout, 3-0, with Charlotte, the eighth-seed. Sixth-seeded DePaul upset third-seeded Marquette, 2-1, in double overtime. The only match of the day that was completed in regulation play was fifth-seeded Saint Louis upending fourth-seeded USF, 2-0.
The tournament championship provided C-USA soccer fans one more double-over time contest as DePaul and Saint Louis played to a 1-1 tie with the Blue Demons taking home the title, 4-3, on penalty kicks.
