C-USA Women's Soccer Award Winners

MILWAUKEE- Conference USA announced its 2001 all-league teams and postseason award winners at the annual pre-tournament banquet Tuesday evening at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. The C-USA Tournament will be held Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at Valley Fields near the Marquette University campus.

After leading her team to the first undefeated and untied record in league history, Cincinnati coach MERIDY GLENN is the 2001 Conference USA Coach of the Year. The Bearcats have won at least a share of three Conference USA titles in the last six years. Glenn became the ninth Division I women's head coach to surpass the 200-career victory plateau when the Bearcats downed Memphis, 2-0 on Sept. 30. Tough defense has been a trademark of Glenn-coached teams, and this year has been no exception. UC currently leads the nation in goals against average (0.34) and is well on pace to break the league's single-season GAA record.

Marquette's KATE GORDON, who is fifth on Conference USA's career goals scored list (34), is the Conference USA Player of the Year. One of C-USA's most potent offensive players, Gordon is fourth in the league with eight goals and sixth with 47 shots this season. Her top performance of the season came last week against local rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as her two goals and one assist paced the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 win over the regionally-ranked Panthers. She is the second Marquette player to win C-USA's top individual soccer honor - MU's Kelly Roethe was the 1997 honoree.

Cincinnati's CHRISTY HOFFMAN and Marquette's ANNE DALECKY share C-USA's Defensive Player of the Year award. Hoffman currently leads the nation with a 0.34 GAA and has posted a league record 11.5 shutouts this season. She has 30 shutouts this season, which is first in Cincinnati's record book and second in league annals. Dalecky anchors the league's second-best defense, a unit that has surrendered just 12 goals in 18 matches this fall. She has played in all 18 matches and started 17 of those contests. Hoffman is the first Cincinnati player to receive this honor since Tracy Pohl in 1997, and Dalecky is the Golden Eagles' first recipient since Rhegan Hyppio in 1998.

Gordon, Hoffman and Dalecky are joined on the First Team All-Conference USA by forwards AMANDA DUFFY (East Carolina) and ANN THOMAS (Cincinnati), midfielders JENNY KEHL (Saint Louis), KRISTEN JENSEN (Marquette), DENISE PETERS (UAB) and TASHA WAGNER (Cincinnati) and defenders MIKEL CASEY (Charlotte) and HEATHER HERWEH (Cincinnati)

Saint Louis midfielder JAMIE PERRY is the Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Perry, who was also named Second Team All-Conference USA, has made an immediate impact this fall, ranking second in the league in shots (55), points (26) and goals (11). She has tied the SLU single-season record for points and goals. She is also seventh on SLU's career goals list and ninth on the all-time points list.

Cincinnati led the way with four first-team selections, while Marquette had three and East Carolina, Saint Louis, Charlotte and UAB each had one.

Wednesday's first round matches feature top-seeded Cincinnati (15-3-0, 10-0-0) and eighth-seeded Saint Louis (8-9-1, 5-4-1) at 12 p.m., fourth-seeded Tulane (9-7-0, 7-3-0) and fifth-seeded UAB (10-8-0, 7-3-0) at 2:30 p.m., third-seeded Charlotte (9-6-3, 7-2-1) and sixth-seeded East Carolina (10-8-0, 6-4-0) at 5 p.m. and second-seeded Marquette (14-4-0, 8-2-0) and seventh-seeded Houston (8-8-1, 6-4-0) at 7:30 p.m. Semifinals will be held Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with the final slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The final will be shown on the Conference USA Television Network.
