Tulane defender Asia Simons has been named to the Soccer America Women’s College Soccer National Team of the Week for the period ending Oct. 12.
Simons, a senior from Bradenton, Fla., was one of just 11 players selected to the pretigious national team and one of only three defenders listed.
“This is a great honor for both Asia and the Tulane women’s soccer program,” Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. “Asia is one of the top players in Conference USA and has had a great season for us so far. It is very exciting that she has been recognized by the top soccer publication in the country.”
Simons led Tulane to a pair of Conference USA victories over the weekend that vaulted the Green Wave to the top of the league standings. In the two games, Simons took just three shots, but scored on all three. She started the weekend with the Wave’s first goal in the 2-1 win over South Florida. She also scored the opening goal in Tulane’s win over UAB on a 35-yard free kick, before sealing the victory with a golden goal penalty kick in the seventh minute of overtime.
One of just three players to have started all 13 games so far this season, Simons leads the team with five goals and is second on the squad with 10 total points. Four of her five goals have come in the last three contests.
As a team, Tulane boasts a 9-3-1 overall record and is atop the Conference USA standings with a 5-1-0 league mark. The Wave return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, when the squad travels to face Conference USA rival Memphis.
