Women's Soccer Weekly Notes (Sept. 24-Oct. 1)

    CHARLOTTE

    After starting the year at 0-2-1, Charlotte has now won four straight matches following a 1-0 triumph over Tulane on Sept. 23. Charlotte has a 26 match home league unbeaten streak, dating back to Sept. 29, 1996. This streak includes five straight wins and an overall mark of 23-0-3. The 49ers opened the C-USA ledger with a 4-0 win over Houston on Sept. 21. This marks the third straight year that Charlotte has shutout its first two league opponents.

    CINCINNATI

    Cincinnati also shutout its first two league opponents, downing Southern Miss, 3-0 and South Florida, 4-0. ANN THOMAS had three goals and one assist in the two matches, while sophomore KRISTINA WILSON spearheaded the defense. Wilson also had a goal off a corner kick against South Florida.

    DE PAUL

    DePaul tied South Florida, 2-2 on Sept. 21 and lost to UAB, 4-0 on Sept. 23. At 5-2-1, DePaul has already recorded the second-highest win total in the program's history. The Blue Demons’ 17 goals through eight matches this season surpasses the total of 15 all of last year. Four players have at least three goals this season, while one person did it last year.

    EAST CAROLINA

    East Carolina is 2-0 in its Conference USA debut season. The Pirates defeated Houston, 1-0 and TCU, 2-1. AMANDA DUFFY leads ECU with four goals and two assists. Goalkeeper LAUREN WOLF had 13 saves in the two victories. LAUREN BOUCHER’s game-winning goal against TCU was her first collegiate goal.

    HOUSTON

    Houston lost to East Carolina, 1-0 and Charlotte, 4-0. Goalkeeper ROBIN CATE, who ranks 11 th in the nation in saves, recorded five against ECU. The Cougars’ Sept. 14 match against Southwest Texas State has been rescheduled for Oct. 24.

    LOUISVILLE

    Louisville went 1-1 in its first two C-USA matches, downing Southern Miss, 3-2 in overtime but falling to Tulane, 3-2. Freshmen JENNY STARR and RACHEL GOLD each had their first career goals against the Green Wave. AMBER JOLLEY had the game-winning goal against Southern Miss, while MEREDITH MILLER added nine saves.

    MARQUETTE

    Marquette defeated UAB, 1-0 on Sept. 21 and Memphis, 3-2 on Sept. 23, ASHLEY SPAKOWITZ recorded two assists, one each in MU victories. Goalkeeper ASHLEIGH KOENIG did not allow a goal in the two matches and shut out UAB with three saves. She played 56:20 against Memphis and did not allow a goal.

    MEMPHIS

    Despite two REBECCA SPARROW goals in the final 15 minutes, Memphis suffered a 3-2 setback at Marquette on Sept. 23. The Tigers also suffered a 2-0 loss at Saint Louis on Sept. 21.

    SAINT LOUIS

    Saint Louis defeated Memphis, 2-0 but lost a 3-2, double overtime match to TCU. JAMIE PERRY had seven points in three matches from Sept. 16-23. On the season, she leads the Billikens with nine points. She has four goals on 15 shots, including nine shots on goal.

    SOUTH FLORIDA

    South Florida tied DePaul, 2-2 on Sept. 21 but suffered a 4-0 loss at Cincinnati on Sept. 23. JEN STAHL and RACHEL THJMOE tallied the Bulls’ goals against DePaul. South Florida hosts Louisville Sept. 28 and Charlotte on Sept. 30.

    SOUTHERN MISS

    Southern Miss suffered its first two losses of the season, as Louisville (3-2 overtime) and Cincinnati (3-0) each beat USM. This also marks the first time this season that Southern Miss has been scored upon. Junior forward TRICIA WILES now leads the team with four goals and five assists this year.

    TCU

    TCU snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-2, double overtime win over Saint Louis on Sept. 23. Coming off the bench, freshman LAURA GREENBERG scored four goals while taking only four shots on goal. The win over SLU was TCU’s first Conference USA triumph.

    TULANE

    Tulane defeated Louisville, 3-2 on Sept. 21 but lost to Charlotte, 1-0 on Sept. 23. Freshman goalkeeper SARAH SIMPSON had a total of 30 saves in three matches this past week. She set a new school record with 12 saves against No. 10 Texas A&M before tying the mark with 12 saves against Charlotte. Simpson has recorded 45 saves in five games, which already ranks her sixth on the Tulane single-season charts. Tulane's game against Texas A&M last Monday was the Wave's first against a ranked opponent since facing Virginia during the 1998 season.

    UAB

    UAB posted its second shutout of the season with a 4-0 win at DePaul. UAB had a balanced offensive effort, as four different players score against DePaul. This marks the Blazers’ best offensive output since Oct. 7, 2000, when they defeated Memphis, 4-0. USB hosts Cincinnati on Sept. 28 and 17-time defending champion North Carolina on Sept. 30.
