As head coach at Memphis, West has generated a new enthusiasm and excitement for the Tiger football program. He led the 2003 squad to an 9-4 record, including a 27-17 victory over North Texas University in the New Orleans Bowl. It was the U of M's first bowl appearance in 32 years and the team's nine victories were the most by a Tiger squad since the 1963 season.
Memphis placed nine players on the 2003 All-Conference USA team and one on the All-Freshman squad
