Track Opens Outdoor Season With Big Efforts in Mississippi

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Gloria Asumnu and senior Jelena Jurlina led the Tulane women's track team to an impressive debut in the outdoor season at the Southern Miss Invitational at the Marshall Bell Track and Field Complex on Saturday. The Green Wave posted eight top-four finishes in the meet. Jurlina opened her final season by posting a pair of NCAA Regional Qualifying marks. The senior won both the discus and the javelin with distances of 165 feet, seven inches and 148 feet, four inches, respectively. Asumnu, meanwhile, matched her own school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.50 seconds. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.94 seconds. Both times NCAA Regional Qualifying marks. Tulane had an impressive team effort in the 400-meter dash with four runners finishing in the top nine of the race. Sophomore Shanon Beelendorf was third overall with a time of 57.30, followed by freshman Shaina Pelham (fourth), Vanessa Kienast (seventh) and Kyra Lobbins (ninth). Senior Helmi Leppanen added a second-place effort in the javelin with a throw of 130 feet, seven inches. Sophomore Aubrey Phillips was also solid, taking third-place in the 5000-meter run at 19:14.51. Tulane returns to action next weekend, competing at the Louisiana Classic in Lafayette and the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa. Tulane Results:
