Charlotte's Montgomery Becomes Three-time All-American at NCAAs
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Charlotte 49ers long jumper Will Montgomery became the program's first three-time All-American on Wednesday, finishing
seventh at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at LSU. The 49ers' Matt Rausch and Derrick Johnson also competed this evening, placing 19th in the hammer throw and 14th in the 200-meter preliminaries, respectively.
Montgomery, a senior from Fletcher, N.C., placed seventh in the long
jump with a 25'4.75" mark. It is the third time he has earned All-America
notice, doing so at last year's outdoor championships and this year's indoor
championships. He earned this year's trip with a 25'9.25" qualifying mark to
win at the Conference USA Championships. Walter Davis won the event for the
championships' host. He covered a distance of 26'6.25"
Rausch, a senior from Baldwinsville, N.Y., was 19th in the hammer
with a throw of 195'6". He qualified for his first NCAA Championships with a
throw of 212'2" at the Auburn Invitational. He is the first thrower to
compete for Charlotte at NCAAs. Andras Haklits won the event for Georgia
with a 253'8" toss.
Johnson, a freshman from Charleston, W.Va., posted the 14th-best
time in the prelims of the 200-meter dash. His time of 21.01 is the school's
second-fastest this season. He qualified for NCAAs with a school-record time
of 20.65 at the C-USA Championships and is the Niners' first sprinter to
compete at the championships.
Johnson is also slated to compete in the 100-meter dash. He will
compete in the prelims Thursday night at 7:00 CST.
