May 11, 2007 HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston men and Rice women lead after the second day of competition at the 2007 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Rice Track Stadium Friday. The Houston men are in front with 3.5-point lead over second-place Memphis. UTEP is third with 49 points, East Carolina is fourth with 39 points and Tulsa and Rice are fifth and sixth with 33 and 32.5 points, respectively. Southern Miss stands in seventh-place with 16 points to round out the men's day two standings. The Rice women's team stands in first place with 54.5 points, while SMU follows in second with 38 points and UTEP in third with 36. Houston and Memphis are tied for fourth with 31 points apiece. UCF is sixth with 26 points and Tulsa ranks seventh with 23.5. East Carolina has a one-point edge over Southern Miss' 22 points for eight and ninth-places. UAB, Tulane and Marshall wraped up the women's day two standings with 15, eight and six points, respectively. UTEP claimed gold and repeated as conference champions in both the women's and men's javelin throw Friday afternoon. Erma Gene Evans recorded the second straight Conference USA meet record when she cleared a championship-best 56.45m (185-2") in the women's javelin. Evans' clearance was one of four NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the event. Alex van der Merwe also recorded a regional mark and repeated his javelin title with a toss of 66.58m (218-5"), followed by Memphis Christian McDonald (63.44m) and Houston's Andy Tackett (60.38m). Southern Miss' Tanika Liburd tied a championship record with a leap of 6.49m (21-3.5") in the women's long jump to be one of fourth athletes to qualify for a NCAA Regional. Funmi Jimoh of Rice earned a mark of 6.31m (20-8.5"), while a pair of Houston jumpers - Adedayo Ogunnyi and Reachel Easley - finished third (6.10m/20-0.25") and fourth (6.01m/19-8.75"), respectively. The men's shot put title went to Rice's Luke Stadel who recorded an NCAA Regional mark of 17.91m (58-9.25"), followed by another regional clearance of 16.88m (55-4.75") by Memphis' Glenn Edwards. Lucas Mireles of Houston earned all-conference with a third-place mark of 16.77m (55-0.25"). C-USA's top three performers in the women's shot put qualified for NCAA action. Memphis' Gail Lee won the event for the second-consecutive year with a toss of 16.47m (54-0.50"), followed by Tulsa's Stephanie Jeffers (15.34m) and LaKendra Thames of UCF (14.88m). SMU's Gaelle Niare picked up her second gold medal with a 1.80m (5-10.75") NCAA Regional qualifying performance in the long jump. Taking gold in the men's long jump was Brandon Winbush of Memphis with a leap of 7.26m (23-10"). UTEP's Patrick Mutai led from start to finish too repeat as the men's 3,000-meters steeplechase champion. Mutai clocked a regional qualifying time of 9:01.77, ahead of teammate Nicodemus Ng'etich time of 9:18.54 for silver. The women's 3,000-meters steeplechase title was captured by Rice's Kate Gorry, who clocked a regional time of 10:42.87. She was one of three runners to qualify for a regional. Ashlea Gilfillan of Tulsa and UAB's Whitney Mays were the other two with times of 10:45.92 and 10:46.08, respectively. Alex Bentley of Houston set a season-best and NCAA Regional mark of 5.06m (16-07.25") to win the men's pole vault title. Finishing second was Rice's Tyler Whitham with a final mark of 4.91m (16-01.25"). Tying for third was Memphis' Brian Prackett and Rice's Chris Kato, each cleared 4.31m (14-01.75"). All-conference honors are awarded to the individuals finishing in the top-three, with first-team honors going to the winners and second-team merits are awarded to the second-place finishers.
