    Ron Pollard of East Carolina earned Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 10. Pollard claimed a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the Carolina May Classic Invitational last weekend with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 51.71

    Pollard claimed a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the Carolina May Classic Invitational last weekend. His time of 51.71 qualified him for the NCAA regionals and is the third fastest time in C-USA action this season. Pollard’s mark was one-hundredth of a second off his career-best (51.70), which he set earlier this year at the Sea Ray Relays on April 10.

    NOTING CONFERENCE USA MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

    RON POLLARD of East Carolina claimed second place in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.71 at the Carolina May Classic Invitational last weekend. In the 110 hurdles, HECTOR COTTO placed second with a time of 14.26. Both Pollard's and Cotto's times were NCAA regional qualifying marks. Four Pirates placed in the top seven of the 400, led by senior B.J. HENDERSON who captured first place (47.45). DARUS COFIELD finished third (47.97), Thomas Lewis was fifth (48.35) and DOMONICK RICHMOND placed seventh (48.94) … ALEX WINSTEL of Houston was the runner-up in the 800 and the Cougars won the men's 4x400-meter relay at the Sam Houston State Tune Up meet last weekend. Winstel finished the race with a time of 1:52.40 and CHRIS WHITE had a time of 1:54.34 to place seventh. UH also won the men's 4x400 relay in its final meet before the Conference USA Championships with a time of 3:09.97 … The Louisville 4x400-meter relay team broke the school record at the Billy Hayes Invitational in the Cardinals' final tune-up before the Conference USA Championship. The team of JONATHAN COMBS, AARON MCANDREW, STEVEN PERKINS and RYAN BRIDGEMAN finished sixth in the race with a time of 3:13.65, bettering the two-year old record by more than a second. Sophomore ARTHUR TURLAND was the top collegiate athlete and third-place finisher overall in the discus with a regional qualifying mark of 170-10, the fourth time this season he has hit the qualifying mark. Senior JOSH BRANNEN set a personal record in the hammer throw with a mark of 176-5 to place 11th … Memphis thrower GAUTE MYKLEBUST broke his own school record in the discus with a toss of 60.85 at the Modesto Relays on Saturday at the Modesto Junior College Track. Myklebust set a school record (breaking his own) at the Bulldog Relays on March 27 with a throw of 59.33. His new season best mark of 60.85 is the best in C-USA and ranks fourth in the nation in 2004.
