Butler's Bienemy Named AVCA All-American for Second Time

Dec. 17, 2004

One season after becoming the first All-America selection in Butler volleyball history, senior Areal Bienemy repeated the honor Wednesday (Dec. 15) as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) saluted Bienemy as an All-America honorable mention selection.

Bienemy was named to the AVCA's 12-person "All-Midwest Region" team Dec. 7. Bienemy also earned the honor last season when she eventually was named All-America honorable mention and adds the award to her two consecutive "All-Horizon League" first team accolades.

The 6-0 middle blocker finished the 2004 season with averages of 3.89 kills, 1.28 blocks and 1.23 digs per game, while hitting .242 on the season. The Violet, La., native finished the season ranked second in the league in blocks, third in hitting percentage and fifth in kills. Her 371 career total blocks are seventh in Butler history and her 1,217 kills rank as the tenth-best mark.

Bienemy is one of just five players from this season's region honorees to be named to the team in consecutive seasons. She was named to the "All-Tournament Team" in all three of the invitationals Butler participated in this season.

Bienemy helped the Bulldogs to 12-2 regular season Horizon League record, which gave Butler a second-place finish in the conference. The Bulldogs, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Sharon Clark, finished the 2004 campaign with a record of 18-10.

The 2004 AVCA Division I Player of the Year will be announced Friday, Dec. 17 at the AVCA banquet in Long Beach, Calif., the site of this season's championship match. The chair of the AVCA Awards committee is current Illinois State and former Butler coach Sharon Dingman.
