Butler's Carter and Bienemy Named to All-Horizon League Team

Nov. 20, 2003

Juniors Kali Carter and Areal Bienemy were selected to the All-Horizon League team, the league announced today. The league's volleyball coaches selected the 12-player team as the regular season concluded last weekend.

Carter, an outside hitter, led the Bulldogs in kills during the season, registering 4.09 per game. That total places her fourth in the Horizon League entering this weekend's Horizon League Championship. The Columbus, Ind., native also finished the regular season ranked six in digs (3.69 dpg) and seventh in points (4.57 ppg). The junior joined senior Amanda Matthews as the only two Bulldogs to see action in all of the team's 118 games during the regular season.

Carter eclipsed her 1,000th career kill and 1,000th career dig earlier this season. The junior led the Bulldogs in kills on 20 occasions, surpassing the 20-kill plateau eight times. She was named the MVP of the New Orleans Invitational, while also being an "All-Tournament Team" selection at the Bearcat (Cincinnati) Invitational and the Butler Invitational this season.

Bienemy, a middle blocker, finished seventh in the Horizon League in hitting percentage, hitting at a .280 clip during the regular season. The Violet, La., product also finished tenth in the league in blocking at 1.01 bpg. The junior was honored as the Horizon League "Player of the Week" for the week of Oct. 13. Bienemy led the Bulldogs in kills in their last two regular season matches. The junior hit at least .475 in three matches this season, including a .475 hitting percentage in a 23-kill, six-block performance against Wright State Oct. 3.

Freshmen Alyssa Cress and Krystal Hendrix were named to the six-member "All-Newcomer Team" for their efforts in their rookie campaigns. Cress, the Bulldogs' libero, finished the season third in the league in digs at 3.83 per game. Hendrix's 1.17 blocks per game were good enough for fifth in the league's regular season rankings. The Salt Lake City, Utah, native also added 2.07 kpg.

UW-Green Bay's Janelle Tomlinson and UW-Milwaukee's Lindsey Spoden shared "Player of the Year" honors. Wright State's Allie Smerz was named "Defensive Player of the Year," while Courtney Ashley of Loyola was selected as the "Newcomer of the Year." Kathy Litzau, coach of the regular season champion Panthers of UW-Milwaukee, was named "Coach of the Year."

Butler will host the Horizon League tournament this weekend at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs, the league's No. 4 seed after a 19-11 regular season, play Friday at 7:30 p.m. Check the volleyball page on www.butlersports.com for championship information.
