Bulldogs Welcome Two League Foes to Hinkle

Oct. 6, 2003

GOING THE DISTANCE: The Bulldogs only played two matches this week, but they spent plenty of time on the court. Tuesday's win over IUPUI and Friday's tilt with league foe Wright State both went five games. Junior Kali Carter led the team in kills in both matches, posting 21 at IUPUI and a team season high of 24 against the Raiders. Amanda Matthews had a season-high 64 assists against IUPUI, while Alyssa Cress' 26 digs against Wright State were also a Butler season high. Areal Bienemy hit .475 (23 kills, four errors, 40 attacks) in Friday's match. Carter's 24 and Bienemy's 23 kills were both new career highs.

GRAND OCCASION: Matthews recorded her 1,000th career dig in Friday's match against Wright State. It's been a season of milestones for Matthews as she's also registered her 3,000th assist and 100th service ace. Two points after Matthews' feat, sophomore Megan Knightly recorded her 500th career dig. Knightly's 25 digs on the night were a career high.

COMING TO TOWN: Through Sunday's action, Cleveland State posts an 11-8 overall record (1-3 in Horizon League), while Youngstown State is 8-7 (1-3 in Horizon League). The Bulldogs split a pair of decisions against the Vikings in 2002 with each team winning on their home court. Butler beat the Penguins in both meetings last season. Butler's two opponents on the weekend rank 1-2 in blocks in the Horizon League, just ahead of the Bulldogs' 2.46 bpg. In the individual statistics, the three teams account for the top seven spots in blocks in the league.

QUICK HITS: The Bulldogs are 11-2 when Carter leads the team in kills, 1-4 when someone else does...Carter or Bienemy have led the Bulldogs in kills in every match this season...Cress has recorded double figures in digs in 16 of the team's 18 matches...Carter has five consecutive double-doubles...until Friday's win over Wright State, the Bulldogs hadn't won their first three league matches since 1997...Butler's 3-0 victory at Loyola Sept. 26 was the first sweep of the Ramblers at home by an opponent since 1997.
