Weatherington Hired As Volleyball Assistant Coach
April 4, 2003 INDIANAPOLIS - Head coach Sharon Clark has announced the hiring of Karen Weatherington as the top assistant of the Butler volleyball team. Weatherington joins the Butler squad after serving two seasons as the top assistant at Clemson University, where she was responsible for the middle hitters as well as serving as the team's scouting and recruiting coordinator. Weatherington came to Clemson from Iowa State in 2001, where she was the first assistant for two seasons. Prior to Iowa State, she was the first assistant at Duke University from June 1996 until July 1999 to which she recruited several of the nation's top players. Weatherington began her coaching career in 1994 as the first assistant at New Mexico State University where she remained until accepting the position at Duke. While at NMSU, Weatherington helped lead the team to its best finish in the Big West Conference. She also participated in the Aggie Sports Association fundraising program and marketing of the volleyball program. "I feel extremely priveledged to hire someone of Karen's calibur," said Clark. "She has tremendous experiences and is an outstanding recruiter. Her background in the Big 12 and ACC will be well used here. She knows how to recruit and train at a very high level and her enthusiasm is contagious." In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, she served on the Iowa Heart Volleyball Association Board of Directors during the 1999-2000 term during which time she helped restructure the organization, revitalizing interest in volleyball within the community. Weatherington was the head coach and technical director of the Cyclone Cylect Volleyball Club and served as the instructional coach for the USA Volleyball Youth National Team Trials from 1997-2000. She was also an instructor at the Midwest Volleyball Instructors Elite Volleyball Camp from 1997 until 2001, and was a presenter at the AVCA Convention Minority Coaches Forum from 1997-2000. Weatherington is currently a member of USA Volleyball, the Black Coaches Association (BCA) and the Women's Sports Foundation. Weatherington played collegiate volleyball for New Mexico State. A 1988 graduate, she was a starter for the Roadrunners in her final two seasons. Weatherington and her husband, Eddie, are the proud parents of daughter Zoe, born Sept.7, 2001. |
